Thought it was about time I did another blog, especially as I’ve done some pretty exciting things recently and work on the album has moved up a gear. Song writing for album number 5 has seen me sharing my time between London, Stockholm, Hamburg and Copenhagen and I’m so excited with the results – can’t wait for you all to hear ‘The Sea’!
I was very privileged in March to sing with two of the country’s finest orchestras at two impressive venues. Joining the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra for their evening to raise money for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation was great fun, and even better to be back in Liverpool. Within a couple of weeks I was back down in London at the Royal Albert Hall to celebrate Mikhail Gorbachev’s 80th birthday – what a night! I performed with the London Symphony Orchestra in front of a star-studded audience, and even got an introduction from Sharon Stone and Kevin Spacey.
We were really pleased when we heard that ‘Rock Me’ had been chosen to accompany ZDF’s coverage of the Women’s World Cup next month. It’s a fantastic opportunity to be part of the event and you guys know I like my footy! Women’s football is getting more and more popular, the last final was watched by over 12 million people, so that’s a lot of football fans to hear the track. Although ‘Rock Me’ wasn’t written specifically for the coverage, I think you’ll agree that the energy of the song fits in pretty well with what will no doubt be a great atmosphere and tournament – come on England!!
My first performances of the track will be at the end of this week. I’m doing the track acoustically on Friday on German TV and on Saturday at the Felix Sturm v Matthew Macklin boxing match in Cologne, it’ll certainly be the first time I sing in a boxing ring, so maybe I’ll watch ‘Rocky’ before I head out there for a bit of inspiration! Although the song is only being released as a physical single in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, I’m really pleased that you’ll be able to purchase it worldwide on iTunes from June 24 and 26 – depending where in the world you are!
We headed up north to film the video, a traditionally chilly Manchester day didn’t deter us from making a great video – featuring some wicked keepy uppy tricks and I even got to have a bit of a boogie with a crew of very talented dancers. Video shoots and photo shoots aplenty, I had a great shoot with photographer Ray Burmiston for the album and single artwork. I’ve worked with Ray loads of times over the years back as far as 1996! It was a brilliant day with fantastic results the finished images were definitely some of the best pictures I’ve had taken – we also got to rock out to some music during the shoot so it was a really fun day.
And that nearly brings me up to date; I had a fab night at the Cuckoo Club a few weeks ago to celebrate two years of Dean Piper’s column in the Sunday Mirror. The night was also raising money for Macmillan, so I was more than happy to take up Dean’s invitation to sing at the bash. I was joined by Paul and Nick and we did a few of the old favourites acoustically and treated party-goers to a new song called ‘Stupid Game’, which I’m happy to say was really well received. Dean then got up on stage for ‘When You’re Gone’ taking Bryan’s bit – I think he was a bit nervous but did so well, the crowd loved it!
So that was me for the last few weeks, it’s all go! Coming up I’ve got more recording and finishing off of the album… Oh, and the small matter of a video for the first single from the album. Yes, the track has been chosen!
